Film Studies A Level is a fantastic course which allows you to explore and analyse iconic films and learn about films from global contexts. You'll learn how cinematography, sound and editing create meaning, and even plan and create your own film work. Film Studies is a creative subject that builds strong skills in analysis, teamwork and communication – essential sills for your future.

• How films generate meanings and responses.

• Film as an aesthetic medium.

• The different ways in which spectators respond to film.

• Enable you to apply critical approaches to film.

• Enable you to apply knowledge and understanding of film through your own filmmaking or screenwriting.

• We begin by looking at the micro elements which make up film: shot type, camera movement, editing, lighting and sound, performance and mise-en-scene.

• We will study our first set of films, exploring the historical and social contexts in which they were produced and the director’s intention.

• Soon after that, we will apply our knowledge of film through our own short film making to develop our skills for coursework.

No two film lessons are the same: in one lesson we may be exploring the micro elements by analysing clips of our set film works, in others we may be researching and presenting on film movements and film theory, and in some lessons we may be working creatively to storyboard, film and edit our own films.
