PHYSICAL EDUCATION

A Level Physical Education offers a broad, engaging and academically rigorous programme designed for students who are passionate about sport and physical activity. The course develops both theoretical understanding and practical performance, enabling students to gain a deep insight into the factors that influence sporting performance and participation.

Students study three core areas: Applied Anatomy and Physiology, Skill Acquisition and Sport Psychology, and Sport, Society and Technology. Across these areas, learners explore how the body responds to exercise, how skills are learned and refined, and how social, cultural, ethical and technological influences shape sport in the UK and globally. Knowledge is regularly applied to real sporting contexts, encouraging analytical thinking and performance improvement.

Practical performance is a key component of the course. Students are assessed in one chosen sport, either as a performer or coach, alongside a written evaluative and analytical task that reflects on performance and development. A high level of commitment to sport is essential, and students are expected to be actively involved in competitive sport outside of school.

Assessment is divided between two written examinations (70% of the A Level) and practical performance with a  written analysis (30%). Entry to the course typically requires a Grade 6 or above in GCSE Physical Education (or equivalent).

AQA A Level Physical Education is ideal for students considering future pathways in sport science, physiotherapy, teaching, coaching, psychology, and sports management, and for those who wish to combine academic study with high-level sporting involvement.
