The IB

Current Bexley Grammar School students in Year 12 and 13 study the International Baccalaureate (IB). Bexley Grammar School has been teaching the IB since 2003 and building on 14 years of experience, became fully IB in 2017. Due to government funding changes, Bexley Grammar School will deliver A levels to all new students from September 2026.

From September 2026, the IBDP will not be offered as a programme of study.  Current students will continue to be supported through the course until May 2027.

The  IBDP (International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme) is more than a qualification in a few subjects but it is certainly not elitist; it is a coherent educational vision based upon a clearly defined set of values which BGS shares and which we summarise in our ethos of Intellect, Empathy and Courage. It offers both depth and breadth and encourages students to develop qualities and skills that are captured in the IB Learner Profile.

Our unrivalled success in the London Borough of Bexley in securing the best destinations for our students, from prestigious work-based placements to a whole range of universities, including record Oxbridge and Russell group universities, is in large part due to the IBDP. Most universities now prefer the IB to A levels and employers regularly call for better knowledge and skills in mathematics, English, languages and science - all of which the IB provides.

Bexley Grammar School Sixth Form enjoys highly committed, well qualified staff, excellent resources, High Performing Specialist Status (Languages, Science with  Mathematics and Leading Edge) and a wealth of extra-curricular activities, all of which go toward creating a dynamic learning environment and providing an enriching educational experience for our students.

Our Aims and Expectations for Sixth Formers:

  • To promote academic excellence
  • To develop the personal and academic abilities of all our students
  • To ensure that every student successfully participates in all aspects of the school life (sporting, music, drama, art, languages and the environment)
  • To develop the leadership potential of all students through the setting of high standards of behaviour, appearance, achievement and endeavour
  • To take an active role in leadership of the school To take responsibility for own learning
  • To promote the school ethos to younger students

Comments from our Ofsted Report:

"Sixth Form provision is outstanding. Students make excellent progress and achieve results that are significantly higher than those found nationally".

"Sixth Form lessons typically feature interesting activities and high levels of intellectual challenge".

"Those students who join from other schools settle quickly and achieve as well as their classmates".

The Sixth Form offers "a very rich and varied curriculum, including an impressive enrichment programme".
