Students take Science A Levels to develop analytical thinking, problem-solving, and practical laboratory skills while exploring the natural world and human behaviour. These subjects encourage curiosity, logical reasoning, and evidence-based analysis. A wealth of co-curricular opportunities are available, from sports through the STEM (details below). Science A Levels prepare students for university courses in Medicine, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Biochemistry, or Sports Science at institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, Newcastle, Birmingham, Imperial College London, or Brighton. Graduates often pursue careers in medicine, research, engineering, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, or technology.

The Science Department offers a wide range of super-curricular opportunities designed to stretch, challenge, and inspire students beyond the classroom. These opportunities allow students to deepen their subject knowledge, explore potential career pathways, and develop the skills required for success at university and in competitive professional fields.

Students can take on leadership roles within the department, including supporting science clubs in local primary schools by delivering engaging demonstrations and practical activities. Within school, students may act as teaching assistants in the Year 7 Science Club and Year 8 STEM Club, developing confidence, communication skills, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Science Prefects play an important mentoring role, supporting younger students through Key Stage 3 Science Clinics and acting as Study Buddies or Mentors in Key Stage 4 Science Clinics. These roles help to consolidate subject understanding while developing leadership and interpersonal skills.

The Senior Science Society is aimed at students considering a future career in science, medicine, engineering, or related fields. Members meet weekly to discuss current scientific developments and issues in the media, attend external lectures, and organise visits from guest speakers from universities and industry.

Students are actively encouraged and supported to take part in national and international competitions such as the Physics, Chemistry, and Biology Olympiads, providing valuable academic stretch and evidence of super-curricular engagement. The department also offers structured support for university applications, including preparation for entrance exams and guidance on subject-specific admissions tests.

For students interested in medicine and healthcare-related careers, we provide interview preparation and practice, supported by links with local GPs and medical professionals. This enables students to gain insight into the realities of medical careers while developing the communication skills and confidence required for competitive interviews.
