Curriculum Journey
Curriculum - Intent
The curriculum at Bexley Grammar School is designed to inspire and challenge our students at every level in the school. It offers breadth and depth, rigour and enjoyment, and opportunities to excel for every student. It promotes the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of each student and prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
Our curriculum helps students to prepare for higher education and beyond with a global perspective rooted in our school ethos: Intellect, Empathy and Courage.
- Intellect - A pursuit of knowledge
- Empathy – An understanding of others around you
- Courage – The strength to persevere through challenge
Between our ethos and our curriculum, we aspire to develop compassionate leaders who embody the qualities of what we call the BGS Learner.
We provide opportunities that enable and encourage our students to be:
- Resilient
- Risk-takers
- Open-minded
- Reflective
- Knowledgeable
- Inquisitive
Running concurrently with the academic curriculum, we have a thriving House system which fuses ambition and enjoyment, a wealth of clubs and societies, and an incredible array of trips and visits.
curriculum - implementation
Our curriculum, from day one of Year 7 until the final day of Year 13, is one continuous highlight. At Key Stage 3 our students study the fullest range of courses, from the core subjects to curriculum areas such as Latin, Music and Drama. At Key Stage 4, we proudly offer a strong and robust diet of two languages and three sciences, in addition to English, Maths and a range of optional subjects. With Music, Drama, Art and DT available on the options menu, we cater for students with diverse skills and interests. Finally, at Key Stage 5, we offer a broad range of A Levels, AS Levels and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), along with an array of co-curricular opportunities for our Sixth Form students.
All students have equal opportunities to the curriculum at all key stages. In specific circumstances, in liaison with parents / areas, an individual student may be able to follow an adapted pathway, whilst maintaining high expectations and outcomes. The curriculum for students with SEND is adapted to their individual needs as required (see SEND information).
- Year 7 students study the full range of traditional subjects (Mathematics, English, Science, Geography, History, RS, Computing, Design Technology, Art, Drama, Music, PE) as well as Latin and either French or German and a course in PSHCE which meets all of the statutory requirements for the development of young people.
- Year 8 students choose a second modern foreign language from a wide range including French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Mandarin and Japanese.
- Year 9 is a transition year in which the focus is split between creative exploration, depth of study and preparation for GCSE.
- Students in years 10 and 11 take GCSEs in Mathematics, English Language, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, two Language subjects plus three subjects chosen from a wide range including at least one Humanity. All students are therefore following a curriculum that counts towards the EBacc while having two choices from a wide choice of creative subjects; every effort is made to provide students with the options of their choice.
- Students in the Sixth Form typically study 3 A Levels and the EPQ though some students may study 4 A Levels after discussion with the Sixth Form team (typically when Further Maths is part of their curriculum pathway). Students are also expected to contribute to the school community through a variety of cocurricular opportunities, clubs and societies.
